AVOIDING TOURIST TRAP RESTAURANTS WHEN YOU TRAVEL
Travel Tips With Gabrielle Reilly

Laughing Your Way Out of Tourist Trap Restaurants: A Humorous Guide to Avoiding Culinary DisappointmentsWhen traveling to new destinations, experiencing the local cuisine is an essential part of immersing oneself in the culture. However, not all dining establishments are created equal, and falling into the tourist trap of overpriced, mediocre restaurants can put a damper on your culinary adventure. In this article, we present a light-hearted guide to avoiding tourist trap restaurants while incorporating a sense of humour into your dining decisions.

  1. Multilingual Menus: Lost in Translation

One sure-fire way to identify a tourist trap restaurant is a menu that is translated into numerous languages. While offering translations in English and the local language is common and helpful for international visitors, menus in several languages often indicate a place that caters primarily to tourists. To steer clear of mediocre fare, look for establishments with more limited language options, as they are more likely to serve authentic and local dishes.

  1. Beware of Prime Locations with Iconic Views

Restaurants situated in the middle of bustling squares or with stunning views of iconic landmarks may lure tourists in with their picturesque settings. However, these prime locations often come with inflated prices and compromised quality. Instead, consider enjoying a drink at these spots to soak in the ambiance and head to a nearby eatery off the beaten path for a more authentic dining experience.

  1. Flattery Won't Fill Your Stomach

If you encounter overly enthusiastic individuals stationed outside a restaurant, showering you with compliments and urging you to dine there, it's time to exercise caution. These tactics are often employed by tourist trap establishments to lure unsuspecting visitors. Remember, the quality of a restaurant is not determined by the amount of praise you  receive from someone standing outside but by the satisfied customers inside.

  1. The Deceptive Charms of Instagram-Worthy Eateries

In the age of social media, there is an increasing trend of "Instagrammable" restaurants that prioritize aesthetics over culinary excellence. While these visually appealing eateries may make for stunning photos, they often fall short when it comes to taste and value. To avoid the disappointment of an underwhelming meal, consider researching reviews and recommendations from locals or fellow travellers who prioritize quality over mere aesthetics.

Other Tips for Navigating the Culinary Landscape:

a. Follow the Locals: Seek recommendations from locals, hotel staff, or reliable online communities to discover hidden gems and lesser-known culinary hotspots.

b. Explore Side Streets and Neighbourhoods: Venture away from the crowded tourist areas to explore side streets and neighbourhoods where you're more likely to stumble upon authentic and budget-friendly dining options.

c. Embrace the Language Barrier: Don't shy away from restaurants where the staff might not speak fluent English. In fact, language barriers can often lead to unexpected and delightful culinary discoveries, as you navigate menus with the help of gestures, pictures, or even pointing at other diners' dishes.

d. Trust Your Senses: Follow your instincts and trust your senses when passing by restaurants. If the aroma is enticing, the place is filled with locals, and there's a bustling atmosphere, chances are it's a worthwhile spot to try.

e. Research and Plan Ahead: Before traveling, spend some time researching local cuisine, popular dishes, and reputable restaurants in your destination. I rely a lot on Trip Advisor but of course look at the ratings (there has to be more that 15 ratings.)  You can also find restaurants based on location on the map for added convenience.  This knowledge will help you make informed decisions and avoid impulsive choices that may lead to disappointment.

By approaching the task of avoiding tourist trap restaurants with a sense of humour and a willingness to explore, you can turn dining into an exciting adventure during your travels. Remember, it's not just about avoiding disappointment but also embracing the opportunity to discover hidden culinary gems that will leave you with unforgettable memories and a satisfied palate.
